Foals present a driving atmospheric classic with their latest album, “Holy Fire.” A sure fire hit, full of rich sonic textures and oddly smooth melancholy. “Holy Fire” is a strong effort from start to finish, with masterful instruments and production and haunting vocals. Check out the BBC review here and the Pitchfork review HERE. And now, some Vids and a Grooveshark stream of the album…

The Band “People on Vacation” Arrive With
“The Carry On EP”
Bowling for Soup front man Jaret Reddick has a new band with Smile Smile’s Ryan Hamilton. Not sure what to expect after years of Bowling for Soup fandom, we gave it a listen and so should you. The smooth vocals and guitar are the perfect chaser to the pop-punk sounds of BFS and the pair nicely with the Folk Pop sound of Smile Smile. The vocals are brilliant and really soar when in harmony. Jaret’s falsetto syncs brilliantly with Ryan’s leads, and Ryan adds subtle layers when Jaret takes leads.
Two musicians providing a master class in harmonics-which is becoming a lost art. The brilliant “Where Do We Go” tackles heavy questions but also provides perfect examples of the brilliance of their collaboration. We look forward to hearing more from these Texas boys soon, hopefully a full length album to go with their brilliant EP. In the mean time, feel free to enjoy their excellent cover of Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart a Break.”

We’re not too sure what to call the beautiful emerging genre filled with synth and distortion. We can tell you it’s led by Bon Iver, Kanye West, The Weeknd, Polica & newcomers (to the style) Pop Etc. We have this genre organized as “electropop” on Siafu Sounds, but using the term pop in reference to such technically savy music feels perverse.
Seemingly here to assauge our doubt, Pop Etc fits right at home and assures us this new genre rips pop influences from every conceivable genre with an album cover listing several and ending with an “ETC.” Pop Etc isn’t quite the lyrical heavyweight of their counterparts, but they make up for the relative lack of depth with infectiously sweet lyrics layered beautifully with production and instrumentals that fit right in.
1. Pop Etc was originally called “The Morning Benders” but changed their name to dissociate with the phrase’s alternate meaning. (source)
2. Pop Etc introduced their style transition with a free mixtape before unveiling their new album. (mixtape stream)
3. Pop Etc formed while the members were studying at UC Berkley, and the community has embraced them, proclaiming Pop Etc their “best local band.” (source)
